Coming down from wedding tension, time for vacation tension. Nothing serious, but you know how it is… when facing something where a bunch of things can possibly go wrong, you spend some time fretting about it. Forget random thing, random important thing, plane is late, luggage lost, etc etc.

It should be good. But the night before is always a little jumpy, mind running hither and yon looking for something that was missed.

But enough of that, I wanted to thank everyone for the support and congrats over the last couple of days. I’ve been running around like nuts, but yesterday while I was waiting on tenterhooks I kept re-reading your encouragements.

So thanks. :)

Okay so…

I haven’t really had time to process everything yet. In short, it all went really well. The weather was really windy but otherwise sunny and not too hot, so we were able to do things outside as planned. There were little issues (like there always are) but none of the myriad of serious things that could have gone awry, did. People seemed to have a fantastic time. I wore myself out just running around making sure I talked to everyone!

There will be loads of pictures, between the official photog and my brother the part-time paparazzi, never mind everyone with their camera phones. I’ll get some of those up for those that would like to see, when I get home from vacation. I’m incredibly worn out and very glad we took a day of rest in between.

In the meantime, I promised pics of the cake, so here’s one my friend took. It was a hit with everyone!

A yard and a meter happen to be pretty close to each other, which is the only reason I have any sense of scale in metric — and that’s pretty absurd considering we used Canadian textbooks in my math classes for years. ;)

I think we still get a lot of ‘bleed’ because we get a lot of American media, and a lot of it is still imperial. At least, the way people casually talk is still that way, even if textbooks are metric. Metric is somehow less colloquial.

I am with you on that one. Canadian measuring system is fucked. I think it’s because it’s still fairly new? So since there’s old generation and new generation still mixing, it’s all skewed? I dunno…

I think that has a lot to do with it. My parents grew up with imperial, so even though the system had changed officially, I still heard imperial all the time at home. All my Mom’s old cookbooks were that, etc. I actually still get confused when I find a recipe in metric. I have to double-check everything because I think in cups and teaspoons for cooking.

Wow, this is actually *very* interesting to know. I know several Canadian online friends but I have yet to notice if they do the same. I can understand why people don’t get why the US still sticks with the Empirical system (I believe less than 10 do). >_<

I think at least some of it has to do with the fact that feet and inches are human-scale measurements. Easy to relate to, a good breakdown of human measurements. Metric has no foot, no “medium” measure between centimeters and meters, and they’re more abstract to think about.

In theory, everything is officially in metric. You go into a store, everything is metric. In daily practice, we’re all over the place. People at our version of the DMV have conversion charts taped to their desks because they ask people how tall they are and everyone replies in feet despite the fact its officially recorded in meters.

Let’s just say the transition is incomplete. :P

Here’s one of the fun parts of being Canadian. Officially, everything is in metric. Unofficially, however…

I weigh myself in pounds, I buy sliced meat in pounds and kilos, I lift weights in pounds. I couldn’t tell you what an ounce is. I bake in cups and teaspoons and sometimes milliliters but have to look up a fluid ounce every time.

I drive in kilometers per hour, but more or less know what a mile is. I buy gas and milk in liters and haven’t the faintest idea what a gallon is.

I can tell you I’m 5’6” tall, but have no idea what that is in meters and centimeters, except that is says on my license. I wargame in inches and measure curtains in centimeters. What the fuck is a yard? No clue.

I can safely say this is really annoying when I write, because my personal way of relating to distance and mass is completely mixed up. I don’t even know if anyone notices when I slip up and cross the system barrier, but it still annoys me. I think metric is generally more consistent a system, but feet and inches are just so much better for measuring human-scale distances that most of us still use them all the time.

That piece of commentary I reblogged feeds into another thought that’s been floating around in my head recently, one that centers around the objection we see sometimes to the representation of women, LGBT and POC. It isn’t ‘realistic’, it’s argued, to show an equal or greater number of women in a military outfit. It isn’t ‘realistic’ to show an equal or greater number of POC in a fantasy setting based on European, Tolkien-style fantasy. It isn’t ‘realistic’ to have a bi person, let alone two or three. Etc etc.

Which is all bunk, of course, for reasons that have been eloquently stated by others. But I kept coming back to why these is such slavish devotion to these false realisms.

Games are most often about power fantasy, right? Usually that’s represented by the lead, the hero of the story. But I got to thinking that the power fantasy extends much further than just who gets cast as the good guys and the bad guys, it also extends to how the world itself is constructed. For instance, I read a criticism of Dishonored, a game I loved, that I had to agree with — it’s still the same old world, where women and POC are still in the same positions of systematic oppression. They makers of the game were lauded for coming up with a whole new fantastical world, one in which there is no reason whatsoever to import the same systems, and yet those exact same systems are firmly in place, and the narrative doesn’t question it for a second.

So the power fantasy, it isn’t just the main character into which the player projects themselves, is it? It’s the world. A world in which white, straight men are still comfortably in charge. And no matter how much Corvo gets the crap kicked out of him, he still gets to live in a world where his gender and skin color give him a huge advantage.

No wonder there’s so much whining about ‘realism’ when women, LGBT and POC demand more representation in the wider world games create. It breaks the power fantasy in place around the main character.

Who gets to be heroes, who gets to be human?

Right now we’re seeing geek culture across a lot of spaces fight the same battles- misogyny, racism, heterosexism, in videogames, Sci-fi/Fantasy books, movies, etc.

I saw a specific question - “What is gamers problems with women protagonists in games?” - which, you can broaden out to all of those issues.

Heroes.

Idealized characters. Characters with power. Characters with agency. Characters who matter. The fictional examples help us see the potential for real people.

But kyriarchy sits heavy on making sure we never see people HAVING potential. Widening the view of people makes them into full people, and not the roles kyriarchy needs. Which is why the marginalized are best set up as sidekicks, supporting characters, sacrificial characters, caretakers, anyone who demonstrates the “proper place” for such people.

When we see women primary protagonists? They’re sexualized, because even if they’re the “main character”, they’re really there to remind the (assumed, het male) reader/watcher/gamer, who they’re there to serve.

It’s also why we see a lot less POC, non-straight male, non-femme women, women who don’t fit male gaze, characters - because they don’t serve the role of serving the presumed white male consumer, they in fact, displace him by not putting his desires at the center of the universe.

So what the backlash is, is the fact that anyone else might get heroes too. The idea anyone else might… save the world, free the kingdom, destroy the demon lord, whatever. The megalomania of kyriarchy is so deep that even mattering in an imaginary world is too much of a threat to these folks.

Because they have to work so hard everyday to keep those blinders up because reality doesn’t always match their fiction - all of us ARE people, not just worthy of respect, not just demanding it, but also, a lot of us are a lot more fucking competent than you, because we actually had to work for it instead of imagining it. And because that’s too hard to face, even as you have all the institutions serving you, communities working to protect you even when you fail, and taking from our labor to benefit you, you create imaginary worlds where everyone knows their place.

And that’s it. You’re afraid of losing your perfect world in your head. Your ultimate delusion.

Strangely, just because some movies/tv shows/comics/books/videogames exist where you are not the worshipped center of the world - doesn’t magically reach into your head and rip out whatever media you ARE enjoying that puts you at the center.

You’re just so narcissistic that you can’t let anyone else imagine a world where they matter too.

And we see hundreds and thousands of dudebros willing to show up, organize DDOS attacks, get people fired, toss rape and death threats - because they’re afraid of not being the center of the universe.

Willing to spontaneously organize to make rape and death threats because they may not be the center of imaginary worlds.

And society doesn’t see exactly how damaged and dangerous that mentality is? Where a fiction > than someone’s life?

But that’s what it’s always been. The fiction that men are better > women’s lives. The fiction that white people are better > POC lives. The fiction that straight people are the only way > LGBT lives. etc. etc. Anything that challenges that narrative must be silenced.

You maintain your delusions in our blood.

And that’s why anything, no matter how small, “It’s just a game/book/movie”, must be protected.

Because your superiority only exists in delusion.
